Following is part two of our marbling article;
#Marbling
Marble is rock limestone which has been crystallized by pressure, intense heat and slow penetration of minerals over a period of thousands of years.
The wide variety of #colouring in marbles is due to the penetration of minerals into the faults and cracks in the marble.
#Rag Rolling (Chamois Leather)
- Apply the colour to the area to be marbled
- Stripple to remove brush marks
- Wet the chamois and squeeze as dry as possible
- Loosely bunch the chamois into a ball and roll across the surface changing direction frequently
- Re-bunch the chamois each time you roll to prevent repeat patterns. As you roll the chamois will lift off colour from the surface leaving an uneven pattern
- Whilst still wet soften with a badger in all directions to remove harsh edges of colour
Plastic Bag (Shopping Bag)
- Apply the #colour to the area to be marbled
- Pull the bag by the handles and bottom to form straight layers of plastic
- Place the bag on the surface at a 45 degree angle and press down to life off colour in straight lines
- Repeat across the area
- Softening is optional depending on the effect required
Crumpled Newspaper
Apply colour to the area marbled
Crumple up a piece of newspaper
Dab all over the surface until required effect is obtained
Softening is optional depending on the effect required.
These are just a few methods of producing backgrounds for marbles, other methods may be used depending on experience and imagination.
#Marbling Techniques
There are two basic techniques used to imitate marble
- Overglazing
- Positive and Negative Methods
Overglazing Method
This method uses paints and glazes on top of each other to give depth to the marbling but requires drying time between coats.
Materials used in the over glazing method of marbling include thin white or coloured gloss enamel, universal tinters, and marbling medium.
Marbling Medium – Equal parts of turps: linseed oil: varnish
